The House of Brnarda Alba

The House of Brnarda Alba

Death pervades “The House of Bernarda Alba,” not only the two that are knelled at the beginning and end of Federico García Lorca’s last play but also the suffocating atmosphere that permeates life for the inhabitants inside.

In a new production for Hafthoz Art Society & the Vachik Theatre, this story of repression and resistance has been transposed to rural Iran.

“The House of Bernarda Alba” tells the story of an elderly woman, Ehteram Sadat “Bernarda”, whose husband has just died, and she asks her five daughters to go through an eight-year mourning period according to her family’s tradition.
